Conditions
: NW Minnesota - BAUDETTE/WARROAD - LAKE OF THE WOODS & THE RAINY RIVER
Most Lake of the Woods anglers have pulled the plug on open water fishing and set their sights on the upcoming ice fishing season. This weeks cold temperatures have left a skim of ice on the back bays of the lake with reports of a few inches of ice in some areas. Once more ice develops, resorts and outfitters will slowly begin to mark trails for ice travel. While each year is different, day houses are normally set up in early to mid-December. Sleeper fish houses are usually placed a couple weeks after that. Please remember that areas of the lake freeze at different rates so it is very important to work through a resort or outfitter that checks the ice often. Manyboat ramps on the Rainy River are snowy and surrounded by shoreline ice so anglers will need to use extreme caution if planning to fish from boat before the river turns to solid ice. DETROIT LAKES AREA LAKES
Some of the small shallow lakes in the Detroit Lakes area may have walkable ice this weekend as overnight lows drop to the single digits. Anyone planning to walk out onto the ice must check ice often with a spud or ice chisel to assure that ice is at least 3 inches thick. Look for fish to be holding at the remaining green weeds or just off the first shoreline break to deeper water. |
