Holter Lake Recreation
Area is located in west central Montana north of Helena.
The lake
covers 4800 acres and has a maximum depth of 125 feet at the dam.
From a vehicle you will see
an
open, grassy area near the shore of Holter Lake surrounded
sparsely by wooded hills on the northeast end. Boaters and
Kayakers are well rewarded as Holter Lake bestows some majestic scenery
not visible from road accessible shorelines.
Primary fish species
include walleye, rainbow trout, perch, and kokanee salmon. Secondary
species include brown trout, mountain whitefish, burbot and walleye. The reservoir is stocked heavily
and is known for good size rainbows and descent walleyes.
The towns of Wolf Creek and Craig just down the road and
food service within close proximity. This site is
available for day use and overnight camping. There is a
boat launch, fish cleaning station, picnic tables and fire
rings. Fees are normally charged from the second week in
May through the third week in October.
Directions: Take
I-15 north of Helena, take Exit 226, left 3 miles along
Missouri River Road to lake.
